MEET THE TEAM

Lauren Furtner

Lauren Furtner, Counseling Student

Graduate Intern in Counseling

Pronouns: She/her/hers

I am a graduate student intern currently pursuing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I believe in a collaborative approach to therapy, incorporating one’s strengths and lived experiences throughout the therapy process. I value connection and building trusting relationships so clients can show up as their authentic selves. I strive to always meet my clients with empathy, cultural humility, and compassion.

After my experiences working in healthcare, I truly value meeting individuals “where they are” and recognize we’re each our own experts. I also integrate different approaches and techniques to meet individual needs, with the goal of optimizing the therapy experience.

Since completing my undergraduate education at Virginia Tech, I have been working as a Certified Child Life Specialist for the past eight years in various clinical settings at Inova Children’s Hospital and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Through my experience as a child life specialist, I have worked to help children, teens, siblings, and caregivers cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, medical procedures, injury, trauma, loss, and bereavement. My professional focus these last several years has been to facilitate therapeutic play, preparation, and education in order to increase positive coping and reduce fear, anxiety, and pain associated with the healthcare experience. I look forward to working alongside you, or your child, to explore, process, and work toward making positive change.
